I suspect that even if Bin Laden is the focus, that he was sponsored by a few of the less friendly countries in the region.

The condolences from Jordon were particularly hollow since they appended it with a "if you hadn't caused the problem, it wouldn't have happened" comment (paraphrased).

I don't buy into that theory, but whoever was the architect also appears to have considered one other factor: None of these flights was anywhere near full, and a couple were more than half empty. It is a lot harder to herd a full planeload of passengers to the back of a plane. Maybe they checked seat charts on the Internet sites of the airlines to see how much was available?

I have believed from the first day that the operation was planned and executed in extreme secrecy. Not by govts, but by a select group of individuals. Maybe a cross border, cross militant organisational task force which was assigned to carry out SOMETHING. Lot of govts may have financially sponsored what they may have thought was a a little out of the normal terrorist activity....but the actual plan, the plot was controlled and executed without the knowledge of all but a very few. The reasons I say this is because

a) The complete secrecy in which was carried out, and the lack of intelligence information means the plan was known to only the very few. It couldn't be known across a lot of govts or a lot of militant organisations...
b) No Govt, and i repeat this, no Govt could have officially sanctioned this kind of insane carnage. Not due to the goodness of their heart, but because of the outlash, the retribution. This is after all United States of America, the most resourceful, powerful and influential country of the world.

Its my guess that even the guys on the aircraft may not have known the complete plan. Maybe only one of the hijackers on each of those ill fated flights knew the whole and complete plan. Or maybe they were given the final orders just before they left, or even when they were airborne. Most of theose involved may have thought it was just a normal hijacking to get some moslem criminals released from the jail as ransom....like it usually is.

I also believe that if and it is a big if, if the Afghan govt sponsored it, they didn't really know the magnitude and the real plan....and when they found out on that fateful day, i bet their jaws fell open and they said "Holy Sh%t, this is not what we wanted! We are now toast". I believe at that time the person commanding the project was put behind bars <or house arrest> and they will use him as a "Pass Go and Collect $200" card in the diplomatic manouvring.

BWDIK ?
