Thomas, the Soviet Union supported Northern Vietnam and made it very difficult for the US. The US supported Afghan and made it very difficult for the Soviet Union. Now the US and Russia are united - big difference. I also heard that China offered help. With these three superpowers united (will that be for the first time since WWII?), it would be easier this time. JMHO What would you suggest? Remove the cause for terrorism, which in this case is remove all American presence from the Middle East?
