Obviously, both observations are true.

What I was referring to was the age-old propensity to throw out the baby (in this case: personal liberty, freedom, privacy) with the bathwater. Any time masses move in one direction, things get trampled underfoot. Any close examination of American 20th. century history would - I believe - show the steady diminishment of privacy rights to governments. One a right is lost it seldom comes back.

On the other hand, I certainly agree with your quote. And I am no Chamberlain.
