"Can you believe that someone would dare insinuate that we should understand these people... I would understand all right...." You bet. Robert MacNamara wrote extensively and painfully about out mistakes in Vietnam. One of the things he pointed out was that we never understood the North Vietnam and they never understood the US, and that the war was prolonged and poorly fought as a direct result. In an interview the other night he restated that we need to understand these people, not to in any way condone what they have done, but to more effectively combat them. dbernet
