And what I was responding to was in the context of a discussion about nuking Mecca. I'm struggling a lot with much of what I see posted. I remember one post in particular about how we should carpet bomb Egypt because some Egyptian who worked in a soap factory applauded the attack. Egypt? Saudi Arabia? Then there are the posts about piling on the airline industry with shorts, mom and apple pie be damned. This epic event hasn't brought out the best in everyone. The weenies at the CIA and Pentagon may have anti-terrorist actions all planned, but I'd be surprised if GWB has had occasion to reflect on waging such a war. If he ever thought about military action, it would likely have been in the context of the kind of war his father waged, which consciously precluded anything that would likely result in the filling of body bags. From what we've seen from Bush so far, he seems to be a deliberative person. I think the change of paradigm would be new to him and it would take him more than a few days to get his framework shifted. The same would be true of Powell, I'd think, since he was party to the original strategy. I'm also struggling with all the talk about retaliation and retribution. We've talked about those concepts before on this thread in the context of capital punishment. I don't relate well to either of them. I consider them among the baser of human instincts. I'd like to think that, whatever we end up doing, it's a rational and well considered approach to solving the problem of terrorism with a sober appreciation for the implications. If people find satisfaction in the retaliation and retribution aspects it's OK with me, but I think that we are diminished if that's all it's about. I'm on record here as recognizing that there is a window of opportunity that we shouldn't miss. I don't presume to know what amount of time is available or appropriate. But, to me, three days seems unseemly for moving on something of this complexity and import. And I can't help but feel that the push for quick action is mostly about retaliation and retribution rather than the window of opportunity. Karen
