Joe, even small nuclear weapons in the hearts of cities will kill a lot of people that had nothing whatsoever to do with the attack and will not have too much effect on the terrorist organization that planned it. It would be as if someone had killed your sister and you could not get to him so you shot his cousin to get a message, except it would be multiplied by at least tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands (or millions if the nukes are not very small ones).

It would not be justice or even revenge on the people who planned or committed the attacks. It would be the same type of hatred and terror that the hijackers expressed. The people responsible for ordering, planning, and carrying out the attack would be committing an evil as bad as the attacks in the US, and with more power behind that evil the results would even be worse. It would alienate the US from our allies (not just our Arab allies but our European allies and others) and make it harder to actually get those responsible for this week's attacks.

And even if you think that Islamic people in the Middle East are somehow not important (a sickening thought BTW), it would have the practical effect of creating more hatred and more bombers and hijackers, and more support for terrorists. It could lead to an era of barely imagined death and destruction. The idea is stupid, senseless and evil.
