American Airline was one of the earliest to install Honeywell/Trimble GPS based Navigation Systems to their fleet.

I'm fairly certain that work "was" underway, for a Globalstar system that would essentially track all airplanes. It would seem very plausible that the G* constellation could be used to track domestic flights as well as capture in real time all of the information being recorded on flight data and cockpit voice recorders in a national system.

I'll post a message to Maurice on the G* thread...he is the guru of that company's projects and abilities.

i think the other two have adequately answered; would be better for G* because it's not dependent on local cell towers. a more direct satellite system would be better for planes, which can fly anywhere.
