JJ:You say this rhetorically, but I think there is no real way to know. Israel might have actually gotten safer, yes.

I haven't researched this, but I have the strong impression there has been a dramatic rise in Israeli casualties since Sharon has taken power. Is this not the case? Is there a source where we can find out?

JJ,

However, I also hope that we pursue some sort of simultaneous alternative solution (e.g. Marshall Plan), maybe a major economic package for countries that change their ways and actively denounce terrorism or anti-westernism.

I believe we do that. Both Egypt and Jordan receive US aid. The US even give (gave) money to PLO, when the administration misjudged their intentions. The US started providing money to PLO in 1993, hoping that PLO becomes moderate, distances itself from Hamas.

Just about the opposite happened. Palestinians are back to being lunatic, Hamas is more powerful than ever. The US provided almost a $ billion so far.

I am not sure what the current situation is, but I think the US should have cut off the flow of $$$ right after PLO went back to violence and terrorism.
