You do remember the Afghan war, Albert. It only went on for 12 years or so. Russia helped out a lot there, but the people that ended up winning got most of their arms and training from the US. I don't like them, but they don't much care. It's relatively easy to destroy a country like Afghanistan. If you don't go for genocide or the Marshal plan, what grows up in its place can be problematic. The local "round up all the muslims" crowd has pretty self-serving standards about what does and doesn't constitute complicity.
