The base of our intelligence operations began to erode with the infamous Sen. Church; and of course the republicans have had a knock down drag out fight to try to keep the military and defense funded, and to try to do some oil exploration to reduce our dependence on arabian imports....but of course exploring for oil in our pristine wilderness is anathema. Well, we may be facing high oil prices and compromised national security, but luckily the caribou haven't had to disrupt their migration patterns....whew!

<<
Vietnam was a fiasco...and we didn't go all the way with Saddam Hussein...>>

Vietnam war was really a fiasco not only for Americans but to Vietnamese also. The hot heads in Hanoi Communists with the eventually unfounded fears of Capitalism and American Imperialism basically killed at least more than 1.5 Millions of Vietnamese, and caused enormous loss in economic terms. All for nothing... or for worse. Now they have to woo American Capitalism ...

I think Americans need to improve the propaganda war on the enemy population, are more persistent in war efforts, and at the same time should use economic carrots more than military sticks, if necessary.

Nationalism/ideology as in the Vietnam case was already tough enough, I don't know actually how tough religious fanatism war is...even as we entered the 21st century.
