Jerome-- I taught at the U of Zimbabwe and had exposure to African politics. Everything you said is correct and I agree with you about Lumumba and Mobuto. Mobuto became, with US backing, the richest man in the world. Just before arriving in Zimbabwe in '92, my host was deported for his political activities on behalf of Morgan (something or other, I'm a disaster at names) who is now leading the opposition to Mugabe. In fact, there was grafiti at the UZ, which is all black, asking for the return of Ian Smith. Mugabe, who is very bright and informed, was initially loved and respected by both Africans and whites. That changed. BTW, the students were superb.

Brian --- I am also very influenced by Buddhistic teachings, but we disagree on interpretation. Remember, the Dalai Lhama was asked if were angry at China for stealing Tibet. His answer was, "No, they stole my country, why should I allow them to steal my mind." There is nothing in Buddhism that precludes the stopping of wrongdoing. No Buddhist would claim that Hitler should not be stopped. Stopping evil, IMO, unfortunately requires some military component. The terrorists evidently do not share the Buddhistic mandate of universal compassion.

Jerome-- I also agree with you that because of the American Jewish influence, we are tilted towards Israel. However, because of the enormous Arab oil, the rest of the world is even more tilted against Israel. Look at the abomination of the meeting on racism. It was full of anti-Israel hatred. Perhaps I'm wrong, but probably all Jews my age lost family in the holocaust and we have a fiercely never-again mentality. That doesn't mean, as I indicated to you in a private post, that we can't be critical of Israel. Indeed, I do agree with several of your criticisms.

My major point is that we are facing a very different moral system, with a collective mentality and premium on revenge. This bombing is hideously immoral and disproportionate to any provocation. Just because we may hate someone, even if they did us injustice, doesn't mean we should kill and destroy people not involved. I have enemies, but this act....

Jerome, we're getting a lot of CIA bashing and I have no idea if this agency is a net plus or a net minus to us. Can anyone refer to some positive CIA achievements? Or are those secret, too?
