I am not sure Mr. Sagan would approve of Mr. Eco's conclusion. :-)

The very worst punishment would be to make these terrorists live a very long life in captivity and force them to witness the world coming together, in peace and prosperity, and to watch their dreams of death and destruction visited upon their enemies come to nothing. This would be the best, I think. To be cared for by the people you hate, and forced to watch them rise to further greatness- is there any worse punishment than watching the triumph of your enemies? I don't think there is. (but of course there is no safe way to do that, captivity isn't an option, but I wish it was)

Hi Tim,

That piece by Sagan was incredibly timely. Thanks!
