Hi _eco_; Re heinous. I'd use the word "atrocious", as it has just a little less moral import. My figure for "hundreds of thousands" is from taking the First Gulf War figure (U.S. estimate) of 100,000 for Iraqi combat deaths, and adding a multiplier for having to do it to two or three, countries instead of one. Human rights groups claim more Iraqi soldiers died, but I doubt it, unless you add in civilian deaths due to the blockade.

The Gulf War ground action produced a huge number of deaths per day, but it was a relatively light conflict as far as how many total combat deaths the U.S. inflicted on the enemy. Every one of our other modern enemies was dealt with considerably worse.
