An analogy to current events might be found in the Versailles treaty imposed on Germany after World War 1. That incredibly harsh document with its huge reparations bankrupted a proud nation and triggered hyperinflation. Then the depression destroyed what remained of the German economy triggering the rise of Hitler.

A few wise statesmen opposed the Versaille treaty but were ridiculed by the super patriots of that day. But how different history might have been if the super patriots had listened to the dissenters.
