Let me second Jamok's reply. Like everyone else, I want the perpetrators of this week's horror to meet their Judgement sooner rather than later, and I count their state-sponsors as equally guilty. However, anyone who believes we can suppress this problem solely by attempting to force entire peoples to accept our view of what is just, must be willing to kill a lot more people than I am. And by the way, how many here really feel that there was no injustice in displacing the thousand-year occupants of Israel in order to carve out a place for displaced Europeans? Is our support for Israel a just cause? Or another proof that there are no black-and-white answers? We beat Soviet communism by out-succeeding them, and we now have a reasonable chance of drawing the resulting states into the liberal west. Our best chance of beating the fundamentalists long term is to find a way to make the lives of their followers better, not worse.

Vince, well said.

Vince Re..However, anyone who believes we can suppress this problem solely by attempting to force entire peoples to accept our view of what is just, must be willing to kill a lot more people than I am<<<<<<<<

IN the previous sentence you deplored terrorism and in this one you opted out of doing anything about it by refusing to make the hard choices. The one hard choice you don't have to worry about is should we go to war. We are already at war, because they have already declared war upon us; and rules of conduct of gentlemen are out the window. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan et el. are just as guilty as Bin Laden because they have sheltered him and helped him. While Bin Laden doesn't have much to lose, many of these countries do. Knock out the support of these countries, and you will have severely limited Laden's ability to carry out these attacks.

Do you know of many countries lately, who have gotten rich by going to war. War has gotten so costly now, that there hasn't been a rich victor or loser in any war in the last hundred yrs. If we are ever going to improve the lives of the Muslims , we have to have Muslim governments who are interested in the peoples welfare. Which means replace warlike regimes with democratic regimes; much as we did in Japan and Germany. There are Islamic regimes who don't sponsor terrorism, and live and let live. We need more.
