Among the tears I have shed in the last few days none were more poignant than what came from the actions of my son. A poem he wrote for school had the phrase "you could see the towers from everywhere, now no where. He is 13 and said he wanted to fight with our army. I told him I don't know if I would like that. When asked why, I said think of all the war movies you have watched and think of how many of the characters were still alive at the end - as your father I don't want you to be hurt. He said he wanted to go anyway. I was so proud. I hope the coming conflagraton will be over before he is out of high school. I fear it won't be.

Hi Ike,

I hope your country, Pakistan does the right thing....I have my fears. I know the recent history and attitudes toward the west aren't very encouraging. I read your article 'Darkest Day' in "The Iranian'.

I think the real story here is "Fear" not ours but the arab worlds. The Fear that they(terrorists) may have under estimated the US would ever find it's resolve some have thought we lost it after WW2. Since the 60's this country has appeared to have lost it's stomach for casualties since the Vietnam struggle. The world thinks the US has grown soft because of it's high regard for life. History has shown the willingness of the United States to shed it's own blood in the preservation of freedom. We are hated around the world because of our defense of freedom among other nations. It's that simple. America is not imperialistic but believes in the rule of law. Enemies of freedom and human rights are obsessed with our destruction and other democracies in the world.

Now, these enemies have fear that America is resolved to act. And defend itself by whatever means and costs it takes. Americans know the cost of freedom is high, perhaps it is now this generations time to pay? That is the Fear of our enimies.

Here is something I pulled off the internet:

As Marxists, we must understand that this new turn of events will lead to a new situation in which most workers will not be open to our ideas, they will be in a patriotic mood. But there will be many layers who will be looking for a real explanation as to why this happened, and what the way forward is. What we as Marxists have to do in this present situation is to calmly explain what this crisis means, i.e. that there could well be an imperialist war coupled with an economic recession. We must do all that we can to prevent anti-Arab actions and to explain the situation of Palestine; that those really responsible are the imperialist bourgeoisie, who created Osama bin-Laden and his ilk in the first place; that all patriotism does is to prepare the workers to be willingly slaughtered in an imperialist war; the role of the Zionist state in US imperialism's plans; that this war, along with the coming recession will create the conditions which will be favorable for a revolutionary upswing; that only the mass movement of the working class in the fight for socialism can solve the problems inherent in capitalism. If we do this, we can strengthen our forces and even spread the ideas of Marxism more widely among the advanced layers of the working class and youth.
