Agents were no doubt isolated, but their support system has to interact on a routine basis with rest of America- that is where leaks should have come from, and I am sure that these will be targets for recruitment by American intelligence once they are identified. One must conclude that this was not done assiduously to date, hence intelligence failure (one of many, I am sure). Mulling this nasty situation over, I am beginning to think that this "war" is unwinnable, at least in the terms Americans are used to thinking of "winning". Any military victory will only add fuel to the hate, as long as military victory is incomplete. Marshall plans only work after the enemy has surrendered unconditionally. There will be no unconditional surrender here. To win this battle, the battle must be fought on a field other than a military one. In the short term, this "war" will consist of military, diplomatic, and economic initiatives, but I view these as holding actions. To shift the battlefield, the Achilles heel of America vis-a-vis the Middle East must be removed- our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. The next Manhattan project should be the removal of this dependence, eventually moving to alternative energy sources, with nuclear power as a transitional energy source. Once this dependence on foreign oil is removed, the geopolitical calculus changes immensely. Many actions that inflame the Arab world can then be stopped. The "battle" can then be fought on the terrain of quality of life. Humans will, eventually, choose better lives for their children. Over time, the Western ideas of democracy, rule of (secular) law, and capitalism will then have a much better soil to grow in, and will triumph. I hope our leaders have the vision to see the wisdom of this path.
