jamok99, "Your implied idea that we simply 'outwait' (and 'outlive') them implies that the effects of intereactions between us in the meantime won't have significant, or long-term effects. I would disagree."

No, no! I guess it is just my limited English here.
I said "live over", meaning insulate the problem
and let their ideology die faster, by all means:
diplomacy, ultimatums, economic blokade, including
missile strikes. With more internal security and
tighter immigration control.

Hi jamok99; Re the petri dish analogy. I agree with it completely. If we simply wait long enough, the moslem fundamentalist problem will solve itself just like the Communist problem did. A policy of containment is a viable choice, and it is the one that has long been suggested in Foreign Affairs.

Obviously our containment leaked on Tuesday. That was a great victory for our opponent, now we must either expect him to advance to the next level, or we must create a much more great victory for ourselves. Status quo ante bellum is not an option.

Any examples of state sponsored terror operations run against a great power of this magnitude that didn't result in war? I don't recall the Soviets or U.S ever doing this to each other.
