the key to this mess rests in a peaceful resolution of the Isreal/Palastine problem?

That is a misconception. They would hate us for being on top of the international system anyway. As long as we supported moderate regimes against insurgencies, we would be the enemy. Even without direct support, as the linchpin of international institutions that moderate regimes would resort too, we would be the Great Satan.........

"BTW, Do you find it as distressing as I that the key to this mess rests in a peaceful resolution of the Isreal/Palastine problem?"

Where do you get this crazy notion? They hate Isreal AND the U.S. for our freedom, for our free speech, for our equal rights, basically for the things that make us great and allow us to succeed. Don't you see that? They trhow acid in the face of their own women who commit the terrible crime of going outside with their face showing. Women also cannot drive. When they see someone who does it differently (like the U.S. and Isreal) it is a threat to their controlled systems and government.

I hope you look into other ideas than your simple CBS evening news version.

Well Doug, although the Palestinian conflict is perhaps the greater systemic contributor to the ongoing culture of violence and cycles of retribution.... It is by no means the only grievance in the region, or the world.

Terrorism would not "go away" if the Palestinian and Israeli issues were settled. But there can be many forms of terrorism. In South America, it seems to revolve more around kidnap and ransom now... and monetary motivations can be more easily understood and, perhaps, handled.

You say "The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years." Well, I'd rather the US go for the Roman average :)

Bah. It took the British a good 600 years to hit their stride, and they sat the top for a good 200 years or so, and still are in the ring, off the ropes. And we have the best of their institutions, and spirit, with the riches of North America at our disposal. I think its fair to say the 21st will still be "the American Century."
