t4, Saddam is what I call a true regional leader concerned about balances of power, etc. Peoples' religion is a very low priority to him.

hi t4texas,

i suppose if saddam were a "devout" islamic fundamentalist

We must be careful to not confuse devout followers of Islam with fundamentalists and their associated rabble.

I'm a Church going guy but I'm not at all comfortable with Christian or Jewish fundamentalism either. And religion and politics, well, our countries separate them for good reason.

As far as the apostacy issue, the Saudi rulers are already in fear of fundamentalists and if Saddam be removed this would be a concern there since removing him would certainly create a power vacuum that a fundamentalist regime would be only too pleased to fill.
The final resolution and destruction of these terrorists is going to be a long ardous battle. Not one simple strike into Afghanistan. We must prepare ourselves methinks.

Interestingly on that 'devout' issue. One of the hijackers apparently had two DWI convictions and frequented bars. Others frequented bars, including strip bars. I bring this up not to make judgements on those activities (I'm no angel :o). But as far as I know these are not the activities of a 'devout' Muslim willing to die for his faith.
Patriots, martyrs ? I think not, but we can all draw our own conclusions. The evidence is there.
