Yes, the El-Al style doors are a cheap deterrent, but only if the pilots are trained not to open them even if the hijackers start killing cabin stewards or passengers.

On the other hand, using the planes as guided missiles was probably unforeseen. I assume the pilots are trained solely in the "Take me to Havana" scenario, in which case it is probably a good thing to have open cockpit doors.

Did you see the suggestion to use Delta Force personnel as sky marshalls? An absurd waste of resources.

It is a very gloomy time in the States. The missing noise of turbines spinning overhead has made for an eerie quiet which is broken only by the occassional jet fighter showing the flag. The populace is grim, stony faced. The streets of my city carry considerably less traffic.

I don't know whether we will assume a return to normal, though the precedent is certainly there, viz., the Cole and embassy bombings were quickly forgotten with no retaliation. The temptation to stick our collective heads in the sand is going to be great. And mistaken.
