Hi KR,

I used to have a lot of trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome (and other nerve trouble in my arms and shoulders). At the time, I was hand-milking a herd of 30 dairy goats twice a day... and you can't get much more "repetitive" than that when it comes to hand and arm motion. This is, BTW, a very common problem among people who keep dairy goat herds and it was one of the things that made me finally decide to stop dairying about 10 years ago.

If I can give you a couple of pieces of advice gleaned from discussing this problem with a number of people, these are:

1.) avoid surgery if possible. Almost everyone I know who had surgery (and I know quite a few who did), said that it helped them very little or not at all.

2.) try to avoid all situations that contribute to the problem. I used to be into handspinning in a big way, and I had to give that up along with the goats.

3.) stretching exercises and massage help A LOT....such as having someone stretch muscles against the way they start to want to go. Often, with carpal tunnel syndrome in particular, you wake up with your hands curled inwards at an insane angle and you can't straighten them at all. My husband used to help to stretch my hands and wrists my pulling them back (gently) and helping me to straighten my wrists, hands and fingers for about a half an hour each night. This helps A LOT. You want to try to correct these unnatural muscle spasms as they constrict the nerves even more and can eventually deform your hands.
