Islamic Community Prays For America

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Islamic Society of Kansas
City gathered at its mosque for its normal prayers on Friday.

But KMBC reported that the focus of the prayers was on the
attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

"This is our country. We feel that at this time we should be
united together and take whatever the necessary action and
measure should be," one man said.

Although the Islamic center has received a number of threats
as a result of Tuesday's attacks, they want everyone to know
that they consider the attacks senseless acts against innocent
people.

I heartily agree with the first bolded item. On the second one, well, it'd be a more plausible reason to hate us than other reasons I've read.

I remember reading a piece somewhere that pointed out, as a further sign of what bastards we are, that we have no "mourning culture". Well, yeah, I can kinda go along with that. We're more accustomed to giving reasons to mourn than having reasons to mourn. We're ass-kickers. It's just what we do. They should be happy that we (usually) don't put our size 12 wides up any butts that don't deserve it.

I've been chewing on that "mourning culture" phrase all day and though I used to think I was pretty empathic, I really can't get any kind of feel for what it'd be like to have a "mourning culture" and especially why it would be considered a bad thing that we haven't evolved grief into an nationally-recognized, standardized art form. Did the author (I believe it was a "reporter", actually) expect that we would just completely shut down for a week out of grief?

Someone harms my family, I'm filled with grief, but being who I am (is it the American in me?), until I have the perp's blood on my hands, anger and a lust for vengeance share equal billing with the grief.
