I think there is a fair degree of probability that that is exactly what may happen.

Our military and expeditionary capability has been greatly diminished over the past 8 years. There is certainly the risk that ambitious powers in other parts of the world may take advantage of our preoccupation elsewhere to exploit what they view as a golden opportunity to expand their reach.
