Markets and politics are inextricably linked. We prop up monarchist who live in resplendent luxury in the few lucky nations that hit the oil jackpot, and the average Joe on the streets of Damascus, Cairo, Algiers, etc. can't quite get over how little of that wealth spills over to his needs. A basic case of envy, I'd say. As far as they're having direct dealings with the West? Well, they don't have any, of course.
