Well, this thread, and the rest of SI, have certainly been interesting the past few days. Reading people's comments about US-Israeli policy, US-Iraq policy, US-Iran policy, US-Palestine policy, US-Afghanistan policy, the British-Israel-Palestine policy, even the Crusades, makes me understand why you say that something "just is." In the past 100 years - and even longer but I won't go there - the US has had a number of different policies towards everyone else in the world because US interests are incredibly varied, and temporary coalitions are formed, win a term or two at bat, and then fall apart. Dubya isn't responsible for what Clinton did, who wasn't responsible for what Bush daddy did, who actually was sort of responsible for what Reagan did, who wasn't responsible for what Carter did, who wasn't responsible for what Ford did, who wasn't responsible for what Nixon did, who wasn't responsible for what Johnson did, who wasn't responsible for what Kennedy did, because he didn't have much of a voice, and Kennedy wasn't responsible for what Eisenhower did, who wasn't really responsible for most of what Truman did, who probably didn't have much say in what Roosevelt did, who definitely wasn't responsible for what Hoover did, who wasn't responsible for what Coolidge did, and I don't know much about Harding. I don't expect most people all over the world to understand that - we seem to appear as monolithic to them as China does to us. They're responsible for foreign policy, but believe it or not, most Americans don't care much about foreign policy, and politicians are not elected for their skills at foreign policy. Take Clinton, who went to Oxford, and was the darling of Europe. He was, in fact, a hick from Arkansas who could talk a good line of BS. (I am white trash from Louisiana, whose parents were white trash from Mississippi - I know white trash when I see it - and it's not a put down when we say it, but don't you say it.) When his administration took office, the White House was in chaos for months because they were not plugged into the local way of doing things. But they were quickly befriended by wealthy powerful Democrats and shined up so they looked good. In one sense, it doesn't matter whether Dubya is up to the job. It's his job now, and so he's the only one for it. I think he'll do fine, our buddy Kyros thinks he's gonna screw up, well, it's all armchair quarterbacking. Add Dubya to the list of things that "just is." I feel no urgency.
