S O -- It is doubtful the military will underestimate the enemy. They have a good idea what was happening and the mistakes and successes of the Russians. Understanding they are willing to die for their beliefs makes them a very formidable enemy. I do not see what they have done in NY or DC as brave,, I see it as cowardly. I also believe no matter how intelligent they were stupid. Killing unarmed non-combatants is a cowardly act. Dying for the benefit of and wishes of another during a mass murder is stupid.
Our troops and their leaders are not stupid either. Prudent assignment of SF is always a priority. They must work according to their training and equipment and not according to the wishes of conventional officers. Putting troops on the ground eary is a mistake IMO. After the carpet bombing and dropping of naplam but before the big stuff cleans any left overs. There can be no rules imposed by assinine politicians like not bombing specific, areas or during identified time frames,, least of all no assinations. Move in, kill many efficiently, cean up and begin the dropping of various ord again.
<<", if we do that and think it's over. ">> Unless these vermine are exterminated back to the egg cycle it will never be 'over'.

The enemy also has some serious attitude problems.
Osama's followers have been brainwashed to think that the world owes them a living. Thru a cunning mix of religion, fact and fiction the outside world dominated by the US is the problem and they are the victims. Part of this is because that whole region including to some extent Israel, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt and Saudis kuwait etc( Oil is kind of dole, like hitting the lottery) are somehow hooked on the dole.
Pakistan has always been propped up by US military aid which has prevented democracy from taking root by strengthening the generals. Afghans have been used and discarded leaving roving bands without their social eco system to earn a living. The richer mid eastern countries have mostly been squandering their wealth
without converting oil to long term skills/ core competence.
India and countries east including Muslim Bangladesh despite being far poorer do not have this entitlement mentality, and hence do not look to blame others for their problems. Yes every one knows the West has the cards but you play with the hand you are dealt.
Part of Gandhi's message other than non violence was also self sufficiency movement (swadeshi) which instilled/invoked pride and responsibility. And helped throw out the outsider by not buying his stuff.
These countries need structure, institutions, free elections etc. all of which take a long time. Start making shoes for Nike and work your way up the food chain for crying out loud.
