Indurate lends itself better to the concept of actual hardening of physical material such as clay or concrete. Obdurate is much more widely used (at least, I have never heard indurate used orally). But indurate is slightly more flexible in meaning.

Likewise, Tumid and Turgid are similar yet different. But how often does one hear "tumid" spoken, even in fun?!
