For the companies that can borrow even more to buy back their overpriced stock -- this is simply more lost productive capacity -- money down a rathole. Those that will benefit most, short term, are those with high short interest ratios and low floats. This should be interesting to watch -- are CEOs so selfish as to use this to run stops on shorts, even though they know business is in the cr&pper? It will be interesting to see which tech companies go to the debt markets rather quickly in the next few days & what happens to their stock price -- probably worth making a list. I think about anecdotes concerning prior war-time efforts where people were asked to tighten their belts, but now we are encouraged to buy, buy, buy ... to show that we haven't been defeated, though in fact we have suffered a very humbling blow. I'm not a big Sting fan -- but he has a song with a lyric that goes "their logic ties me up and rapes me ... da - do do do, da - da da da is all I want to say to you" Thrift is really the best thing that we can do for our country right now. to quote Nancy Reagan: Just say no ...
