Khalil, My guess (and this is a guess) is that Pakistan probably works opportunistically with the Taliban and would do the same with the Northern Alliance. As you know the relationship between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the US goes way, way back into the Cold War- old friends for a long time. Pakistan needs the friendship of the PRC and the US as counterweights to India, and possibly its long-time "buddies" Russia and the southern CSSR Independent States.

With the charismatic Moshad dead, I do not really see any chance of the Northern Alliance to expand influence much in Afghanistan- especially since the northern Alliance only represents mainly ethnic minorities in Afghanistan.

So, Musharraf's interest in Afghani politics my guess, is to make sure the instability and total destruction of Afghanistan over the last 22 years does not spill over into Pakistan- Don't need mosquitos biting at your heels when you're trying to watch the big dog named India lurking by your front door....
