Hi Monty,

You have hit the nail on the head. Or the tails, as it were.

Because these two aspects - the generous selflesness and narrow world view (not narrow mind! there is a difference) are both present at once and define us as a nation.

Generally speaking, of course. Exceptions in abundance.

I think that were we to become more "worldly", then we would become less generous. Suffer a tragic loss of innocence.

Indeed, this week the US joined the ranks of major nations who have lost innocent civilians through spectacular acts calculated to instill terror in the populace.

And next week we will be amongst those who can claim that it didn't work. Rebuilding and going on.

With eyes more open, perhaps. More "worldly", and not much better off for it.
