As we triumphantly cheer the destruction of the poor people in Iraq. As much of the Arab world joined in the freeing of Kuwait, and accomplished it quickly, with a minimum loss of allied lives, there was much relief and joy. Consternation that the job got left half-complete, by leaving Hussein and the Republican Guard intact, was also well-evident. Since then, Hussein's games with inspectors have helped keep sanctions and penalties intact and, no doubt, the poorest from Iraq have taken the brunt of the result. I have not seen Americans joyous at that result at all, and more than a few have lobbied to relieve that suffering. We perhaps do not project enough to overcome the propaganda that frees Hussein from his integral role in his people's misery; after all, certain humanitarian concessions have been made. Hussein and many near him are exceedingly cruel people. If we spent more time, not projecting that, but holding up mirrors to reflect him out where all might see, that would be a welcome change. And I don't mean leaving that to our government or national media to do.
