HP + Compaq/DEC. Any comments?

The combined entity is bloated with a lot of low-margin business. Supposedly this combined entity is going to head-to-head with IBM - which I think is just a fantasy.

It doesn't make much sense to talk about DEC any more (although I still do). The main DEC assets will soon be gone. Alpha development will stop in 2003. The decision to port VMS to Itanium means that VMS is essentially dead.

The current management of both companies has a proven track record of poor performance, and this looks like a merger born of desparation.

That's not to say that it won't be a good company to trade - after all - DEC was not a well-run company, but offered lots of trading opportunies.

Best Regards,
John Sladek
