One of the problems that I see in the Middle East, is that other than Israel, which, of course, is not a Muslim country, none of these countries has experienced democracy. Perhaps, if after occupying Afghanistan, we made it clear that the people could elect a government of their choosing and provided some economic support to help them prosper, we might find we have converted enemies into friends. After all this is the formula we used in Germany and Japan.
