I would have thought they were old enough... I was reading the newspaper at a veyr young age maybe just the front page and watching TV news...I remember well the end stages of the Vietnam War (when I was 9-10) the Yom Kippur War I remember listing to the news on the radio and TV and maybe even looking at the newspapers (I was 8) and vaguely earlier TV reports when the Vietnam War was must have been at its peak. I was reading newspapers every day by the time Mao died (when I was 11) from what I remember. I remember reading the pages of obituaries and thinking what a historic event it was. I think I grew up with a very realistic view of the World....

Hi CB,
But only to a point. The world is getting smaller and tougher as a result. I explained it to my 8 year old though I admit it was tough.
Seems strange in a way as at that age I was watching Vietnam become the biggest show on television.
