Of course violence and religion do not equate.

But religious people are frequently also violent.

Think "Crusades." Faith-based religious imperialism, n'est-ce pas?

or were the Crusaders also not religious?

Do some more redefining, if it makes you feel better. It doesn't change history, but it might change the text books.
