I should also point out that people do spend money to make themselves feel better -- clothing might do well. Local entertainment might do well. There could be an increase in drinking (if that is possible because there already seems to be quite a bit of that). I think we need to feel that we are getting somewhere -- that we can win, will win and are winning against terrorism. There will be good days and bad days on this score. Our media amplifies even relatively small events and, once onto a story, beats it to death. This is likely to confuse and frighten people as much or more than it informs them. Further "non-conventional" threats will cause episodes of panic, especially anything related to air, water, and food -- and I take no joy in pointing out this possibility. When frightened, people are more likely to believe the strangest things -- rumors, conspiracy theories, wild stories -- and that can lead to a lot of absurd behavior. We need to understand what it means to win a war against terrorism and we need to win that war. All we can do is to hope that the road to victory will not be too bumpy. To be sure, terrorism is lethal to those on the front lines, but it is also aimed at the broader population and their emotional and psychological vulnerabilities. My intention is to live my normal life after a brief pause to regroup my plans and recharge my energy. The best revenge is to live well and without fear.
