A creedal religion is one that has a creed; that says, "I believe in a, b and c, therefore I have it right and will go to heaven, while all the unbelievers have it wrong and will go to hell".

Creedal religions make changing your outlook particularly risky because you risk losing not only your philosophy but your soul. The Japanese were able to transfer quite a bit of their old samurai outlook into new Western forms; they didn't have to keep all parts of it or risk their immortal souls.
