KF wrote<<There's no guarantee of success this time, but, every time in history that the United States has been truly challenged, we have responded in a way that not only eradicated the immediate threat, but put the country and and democratic capitalism in a previously unimagined better position. Or do you really believe that a few thousand malnourished pariahs who rush out to sacrifice their lives out of the monomaniacal belief in a few pitiful fairy tales are a more daunting enemy than Tojo's Japan, Hitler's Germany, and the Warsaw Pact?>>. i respond-- let's review this statement 2-years from now.Not being alarmist but extremely cautionary regards your sense that this is piece of cake.Senator John McCain just said the U.S. need steel itself for a long war, maybe 10years.
But it will require a constant training of commando units as this is being perceived by some very close to this matter as the best way to search and destroy this multi-headed hydra.
Regards the Gulf of Persia war i will once again state i knew the mission was fundamental failure the moment President Bush,sr. failed to allow our troops to enter Baghdad and search and destroy Saddam and his "royal guard".
Also i would go to this site and read very carefully--http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/binladen/etc/scriptupdate.html----it gives insight of just how committed and determined this enemy is---think about it,they just pulled off an attack more successful, more devastating than Pearl Harbor.
more americans died 9/11/2001 than any single day since the Civil War--Antietam(over 20,000???).
Also,if you read the link i gave you you will see this fanatic terrorist movement has been growing relentlessly since the Gulf of Persia war,and it has brought home,a decade later much that was predicted then---but we now are just beginning to see it's terrible fruition.
Read it---see if you still feel as blase as you do now.
Also i heard one "think-tanker" say in a way this is MORE formidable than WWII because are immense economic machine that could generate so many ships planes bombs etc---won't win one we are up against now.
if you think you are up against "a few crazies" i suspect you need reconsider.
regards bombing--bombing Afghanistan has been proven to be a waste of bombs--your only victims are going to the all the innocent, as the EVIL that is TALIBAN will be underground--i mean that literally--under the ground.
Afghanistan has no critical strategic targets, you only have a Khmer Rouge type evil that can vanish very rapidly.
Plus this organization and it's various heads are firmly now established as a Global network.
Senator John McCain just said,in the end,we will win, because we MUST win.
But what a country this is,where we have creeps like Falwell and Robertson saying this attack was God's Judgement----this only stresses we are being hit by extreme Fundamentalism from within and without.I am sure those preposterous creeps Falwell and Robertson made the families of the Dead feel good tonight-NOT!!!!
washingtonpost.com
this is link to Falwell/Robertson story p.s. there are those that feel this is more challenging than WWII as the the vast machinery of this economy won't be as effective this time--this an a enemy hard to target.
these are military thinkers---hard realist.
