Mike, we have two issues here. The first is what to do about the terrorist groups such as Taliban. You and I and I think most people on the thread are in agreement that they should be destroyed.

The second issue is what to do to dry up the popular support of these organizations so that (a) while we are fighting them they do not get help. And (b) once they are gone, they are gone for good and another group will not replace them.

I have no suggestions for the first. The military can do as it sees fit. I have been discussing the second issue. And I think the answer is unconditional humanitarian help and lack of interference.

I don't have my hopes up. I think once the Taliban are gone, we'll set up some kind of a "friendly" regime who will be grateful to the West but its people will take a second seat. But I hope that the lessons of the past 50 years have taught us not to do so.

Yes, the "Prime Directive" applies to other worlds in the series. But in the absence of out space aliens, I think we should try it right here on Earth.
