The only reason for brokerages, trading rooms and large financial services companies to be clustered so closely together, no longer exists....the former need for paper certificates to exchange hands quickly.

UBS Warburg moved their headquarters to Stamford, Connecticut several years ago to get away from the high rent district. Many of their employees already lived in the suburbs, and were thrilled to give up the long commute to Wall Street. Although the building is considered a skyscraper in suburban CT, it certainly would not be considered one in NYC <g>

Some of Lehman Brother employees already telecommute from CT and suburban NY, working from home several days a week.

But, unless there is a large scale sudden move to teleconferencing, face to face meetings still require many to gather in one centralized spot.

That is what caused my cousin to be in Tower 1 on Tuesday morning, rather than at Lehman Bros. in Building 3, which survived. An early morning meeting...
