I hope it's not only the U.S. that does something. As far as it becoming another Viet Nam, I would like to think we've learned something from that experience.( I was there with the Marines in the late 60"s and can personally attest to the ineffectiveness of bombing and large scale troop operations) . In my opinion the most effective weapon employed in that war was the sniper. That will be the case in this situation as well. The key to this whole affair will be timely information and undoubtly the best source of that information will be the local populace of whatever country is under scrutiny at the time. For that reason it needs to be made very clear exactly who the enemy and isn't. Judging from the number of people trying to leave afghanistan, the vast majority of these people aren't willing to give up their lives to protect these ass-holes (government leaders as well as terrorists.). Those that we don't intend to kill we need to cultivate for information purposes. They need to be assured that they can live to a ripe old age "as long as they co-operate".It's hard to intimidate people who figure they going to die no matter what they do. I think this approach is necessary because as you say, these cells exist all around the world. We can't go around bombing dozens of countries for the purpose of getting a small number of people. It seems Hamburg Germany is a large European staging area for many terrorist groups. Are the Free World countries going to storm back and forth across each others borders in this pursuit? No. You don't send out a herd of elephants to kill a rat. You send a bigger rat. The trick is knowing where to sent him.
