You can't seriously think it would ever be possible to "take over the middle east"...just Afganistan would be hard enough, how many years did the Soviets fail at it?

<< We need to take over the Middle East and run it just like we did in Japan after WWII... Install our military, police and Govt. and change these barbaric "cultures"... >>

You have my vote on this. Afganistan would be the starting off point. You could do it with the forces of all nations of Nato, plus our other allies, and cooperation from Russia and China. We could cut off the nation from all supplies, bomb their power and water plants, send in Arab hit teams. The war would be over in a short time, with little loss of allied life.

We wouldn't need to take over the entire middle east. The moderate nations would be much better allies if they didn't have to fear terrorist states such as Iran, Iraq, Syria, and a few others.

BBG -- IMO you underestimate the religious fanatics. The examples you gave had nothing to do with their religion but the Mother (of a) Land. Every religious war since the beginning of time has not been easy. I hope your assessment is correct but history indicates the opposite.

I agree with your assesment of Arabs. Unfortunately, Afghans are not Arabs...

Bin Laden is Arab of course - supposedly another 5-10k more Arab fanatics there (could be more - but some are fighting for the Northern Alliance).

If this comes down to limited ops with small arms the Afghans are going to be tough. Hopefully that will not be the case - this should not become a police action - it should be seek and destroy.

Whether that's the case or not we will see. If our "allies" have their way it will be.

I'm counting on Powell, Rice, Cheney and Bush to realize that this needs to be total war. If we need to go it pretty much alone than so be it.

At least 4 of our NATO "friends" (Norway, the Netherlands, France and Luxembourg) are already hedging...

IMO, we should have vaporized Kandahar tuesday night... that would have made a statement - innocents or no.
