I agree -- I think we have to work harder at infiltrating these groups. Have to get inside their inner circle. This takes time, planning and real know-how. It won't allow the president to come out in a few weeks and parade on TV as though we've taken some wonderful decisive action.

I think he should narrow his focus. A "war" on terrorism -- which sounds very, visible to the public at large -- isn't practical, IMO. I think he needs to do the long term thing without fanfare -- he never should have mentioned it, IMO. He should concentrate on catching the folks responsible for this specific atrocity and that is what he can "bring home" or do to show that we are serious about the matter. Patience is called for -- perhaps even more important is beefing up security here, so that such an event is less likely than before.

Military force by itself seldom produces enduring solutions. The eradication of international terrorism will not be brought about by cruise missiles being fired into Afghanistan and Sudan or through the prolonged deployment of large, well-equipped armies on the territory of states suspected of harbouring terrorists. Such actions can only be counterproductive in a terrorist war - although weapon systems may of course be required when destroying any physical infrastructure associated with the terrorists.

MK, the SAS is Britain's elite strike force. The Brits are masters of guerilla fighting (we taught them the danger of not being masters during the Revolution and the Vietnamese taught us). He knows what he is talking about.
