Serbia, Afganistan are mountainous regions, with a lot
of everything in all directions around them, a new invasion
attempt twice a generation, some join the enemy, some
go higher up.

Israel/palestinia the same but less mountaines, easier to
walk over, back and forth.

Tibet might be added to the first group, but less documented.

In terms of "natural borders" the opposite might be those
isolated on islands, like UK, Japan and in modern times USA.
(except for the civil war and some more, sputniks beeping
high above, duck and cover)

All a question on the particular technology of that time
in history, Hannibal elephants, Napoleon and logistics,
preussian or polish horses, german motorized units, V2s,
russian tanks, nuclear regular bombs or H-bombs and
finally sputniks.
(similar for china, japan, taifuuns,hiroshimas,etc)

But nobody has been able to (really) conquere Chechenia,
Serbia and especially Afganistan.

Vietnam has, or maybe had, something similar.

If splendid isolation, lack of lots of natural borders,
is a blessing or not, is another thing, but an important
factor still today.

As a finn, above is nothing to accomplish, but was
accomplished, the basic, historical understanding.
