You own any mutual funds, Karen? ...Hopefully, those paid guardians of our money starting shorting 18 months ago when the Nasdaq peaked @ 5000.

Actually, I don't own any managed stock mutual funds. I imagine that they have been doing a lot of shorting in the last 18 months. Whatever gave you the idea that I'd have any problem with that?

If you want to risk your own money in some sort of ridiculous, if you ask me, remotely anonymous gesture that you consider patriotic as 'revenge' on 'the enemy,' you're a fool.

If I or anyone else declines to short stocks tomorrow they lose not a dime. They may suffer some lost opportunity, but no actual money. I think that that lost opportunity is a small price for citizens to pay given the scenario.

I have posted on the BR that I have no instinct for retribution or retaliation, let alone revenge. That has nothing to do with my thinking. We have a problem and I want to do what is smart to deal with it.

This market will go down

Of course the market will go down, as well it should. There's been enormous lost business and property this week. Just about everything is worth less than it was a week ago. Blockbuster probably made some money. And the folks who make Blackberries, which I understand worked when cell phones didn't. And the folks who sell socks to the military have better prospects. But, overall, our economy took a big hit, which should appropriately be reflected in stock prices. For that hit to be appropriately reflected, the market will have to go down.

Get all emotions out of your thinking about investing.

Our collective confidence also took a big hit. I will not do anything to contribute to a further decrease in confidence. You can call that emotional if you want. I think it's pretty pragmatic. It is not in my long term best interests to compromise the state of readiness of my country in time of war. So will make my anonymous gesture and not short the market tomorrow so that I can know, if there is a panic, that I have not contributed to it. I will not trade at all unless I see that the trading infrastructure is holding up under the volume. That is what I consider an appropriate response to an attack on my country, in general, and on it's financial system, in particular.

You have apparently considered my point of view and determined that there is no good reason for you to refrain from shorting for one day or enough of the day to ascertain that there is no panic in the market. You will do whatever you consider appropriate as will I. I'm sorry if my posting my views has caused you and Poet undue stress.
