K - ...My basic premise is that the economic burden of becoming independent of Middle East oil is tolerable, if the alternative is nuclear bombs going off in American cities.... This is a false dichotomy. Independence of Middle East oil does absolutely nothing to reduce the threat of terrorism in the US and, if done for non-economic reasons, makes the entire world poorer and reduces the incentives for cooperation, as opposed to conflict. Trying to achieve independence for its own sake is a bet on war, and makes it more likely all by itself. Regards, Don
