This is a false dichotomy. Independence of Middle East oil does absolutely nothing to reduce the threat of terrorism in the US and, if done for non-economic reasons, makes the entire world poorer and reduces the incentives for cooperation, as opposed to conflict. Trying to achieve independence for its own sake is a bet on war, and makes it more likely all by itself.
