<<Unpaid middle aged deputies would not work. You have to have soldier in peak of physical condition with lightning reactions. You don't want some old fogie dying of a heart attack or fumbling for his gun when a young trained terrorist reacts swiftly. >>

Yup, like it or not, some of us must admit the service we can now yield freedom is behind at the trigger.

I said 30s and 40s as well. A 50 year old has seen a lot and is likely to be very tough minded. I would have no compunction in shooting high jackers or bank robbers or whatever. You would need people who support the death penalty. In my past I have made a citizens arrest on a thief who lifted a purse from a woman's handbag. This was an African in a black African country. I've also gone into a fire in a house and rescued an old lady from upstairs. The deputies would be trained to shoot and to shoot to kill. In these latest high jackings people were fumbling for their cell phones and using them. Remember that clip from Indiana Jones I think, where there was a young guy whirling a sword, and our hero pulled out his gun and shot him. Yes you must shoot to kill but it could be done. The 4th plane they rushed with no weapons and saved the plane from crashing into a building.
