Jim,

Thanks for that excellent PBS link as well. I've read most of the excerpts there of the bin Laden interviews and now have to wonder how widespread his beliefs may be in the world. I am especially offended by the following racist statement bin Laden has made:

"We are sure of our victory against the Americans and the Jews as promised by the Prophet: Judgment day shall not come until the Muslim fights the Jew, where the Jew will hide behind trees and stones, and the tree and the stone will speak and say, 'Muslim, behind me is a Jew. Come and kill him.'"

I have traveled to Muslim countries and listened as people have told me, "I have nothing against Jews. It is Zionism that I am against." But this statement goes far beyond that. I had thought that such bigotry was largely confined to the uneducated.

What does the concept of jihaad mean? How far would they take it in the perceived defense of their religion?

Namaste,
Sam
