I think the concern is that the economy was already slipping into recession and now it has another push in that direction.

Where "another push" is the operative word. The attack is not going to, on its own, bring recession to the US. It is just another hit on a struggling economy.

However I think the real importance of the attack is that it will be the catalysts for a correction in the market that was needed regardless. However mutual funds managers need a good excuse to justify the large drop to the fund holders.
